New York Deaf Theatre Special Presentation at the IRT Theater 2010 D.E.A.F. Emerging Artists Festival
July 2, 2010 – Review by Bram Weiser
New York Deaf Theatre (NYDT) was thrilled to work with IRT Theater who presented their 2010 Deaf Emerging Artists (D.E.A.F.) Festival. As part of that effort, NYDT invited famed Deaf actor, Andy Vasnick (all 84 years young of him), to come to New York and perform on June 6th in front of a live audience on their behalf.
As part of his nearly two (2) hours onstage, Andy shared some remembrances of his time in Japan, as well as at Fanwood, Gallaudet and NTD. Even with a 1-man show, Andy kept the audience's rapt attention focused squarely on him...and, oh, yes, not to also mention those lucky, uh, "volunteers" who got invited onstage to interact with him...and learned some on-the-spot acting techniques.
Those who came enjoyed themselves tremendously! Dorothy Cohler, NYDT Board Member, thought Andy was "fantastic" and "so funny", his performance being both "witty and sometimes serious". She found the show, "just hilarious...(and) entertaining!"
Alan Ander, one of Andy's "volunteers", "really enjoyed the performance" and offered a range of 14(!) different superlatives (from "magnificent" and "awesome" to "mind-blowing" and "extraordinary") to describe his experience. . . (you think maybe he enjoyed himself?).
Andy enjoyed performing for a New York audience, and NYDT hopes to be able to bring him back again soon.
